Vision of Friends

[gn_dropcap style=”1″]T[/gn_dropcap]he vision of Friends is really a harvest field of thousands of college students who every year land on the campuses throughout Kansas and Nebraska. They journey there from every state in the union and from countries around the world. Christian Challenge and other campus ministries are dedicated to reaching these precious people with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We as “Friends” seek to come along side and help that good work flourish.

[gn_quote style=”1″]We have been so fortunate to have this foundation for our family, our life and our ministry and we want to ensure that the next generations of students that live in the spiritually fertile lands of Kansas and Nebraska have the same opportunity in the next 50 years.[/gn_quote]

[gn_dropcap style=”1″]I[/gn_dropcap]n the fall of 1977 I walked into a BSU meeting with my Farmhouse Fraternity brother, Brad Waggoner. Little did I know how that relationship, friendship, mentorship –later I learned it was called discipleship—would radically change the course of my life. Being involved in a Bible study, a leadership team and eventually as a core student leader at the BSU was the primary thing in my time at KSU that gave me a solid foundation to build my life around. I married (Jean Higgins) an alumni of the Emporia State BSU ministry in 1982 and have been pursuing the God I got first acquainted with at the BSU for the last 35 years.

The vision of FRIENDS is to get re-connected with alumni of BSU/Christian Challenge ministries in Kansas and Nebraska throughout the years. We have been so fortunate to have this foundation for our family, our life and our ministry and we want to ensure that the next generations of students that live in the spiritually fertile lands of Kansas and Nebraska have the same opportunity in the next 50 years.

Jean and I raised our family in Manhattan, Kansas, where we were privileged to meet so many college students that had this same experience through the BSU/Christian Challenge discipleship-based ministry. We are excited to be on the board of FRIENDS and look forward to meeting again with so many of our BSU/CC FRIENDS in August of 2013 in Kansas City. We want to have the chance to hear the wonderful stories of how God moved and shaped the lives of so many of our FRIENDS in Kansas City next summer. With FRIENDS, we are not sure what GOD is up to, but we believe we are called to help shape the future for so many other college students who get connected with a collegiate Christian Challenge ministry in Kansas and Nebraska.

One bonus for the first real alumni gathering of BSU/Christian Challenge ministries in 2013 is that we will get to honor Bob Anderson and Brett Yohn who pioneered the ministry in the early 70’s and who have given their lives making disciples all over the world living for the sake of the gospel. Please join us in supporting this GOD-breathed mission of extending the reach of the BSU/CC ministries into the next generation.[/gn_column] [gn_column size=”1-2″ last=”1″ style=”0″]

[gn_quote style=”1″]In the past 40 years God has indeed greatly blessed the disciple making work on the campuses in Kansas and Nebraska and it is the goal of Friends to continue this work for decades to come.  It is my request and prayer that God will burden your heart for the work of Friends, as well. [/gn_quote]

[gn_dropcap style=”1″]T[/gn_dropcap]he fall of 1977 was my entrance into the college world and soon my life was forever changed.   Shortly after my arrival, I met Mike Uhl, a fellow dorm mate, and he invited me to join his Bible study group and he taught me that being a follower of Christ was not just about attending church; rather it was about having a dynamic, personal daily encounter with God and seeking to glorify Him and helping others to do the same.

Now, some 30 years after leaving Kansas State, my life is still most influenced by what I learned within the fellowship of the BSU.  The friends that I have kept in contact with are former BSU friends and I am blessed to say that I have deepened my personal friendship with one of the most influential individuals that have ever walked the sidewalks on the K-State campus–Bob Anderson.

I remain amazed at how God has used the directors of Christian Challenge/BSU leadership on the many college campuses across Kansas and Nebraska to impact the lives of men and women around the world.  From strengthening churches across these 2 states as students return home from college, to building multiple church fellowships on nearly every continent in the past 40 years.

Recognizing the unbelievable effectiveness of the disciple making ministries on the campuses across Kansas and Nebraska, it is the desire of Friends to ensure that this work continues as we seek to impact the world for Christ in the next 40 years and for generations to come.  When I hear the stories, meet the people, and read the newsletters of former CC/BSU students, who are working around the world, (some in countries that can’t be listed),  I am in awe how God has done such a tremendous work.

In the past 40 years God has indeed greatly blessed the disciple making work on the campuses in Kansas and Nebraska and it is the goal of Friends to continue this work for decades to come.  It is my request and prayer that God will burden your heart for the work of Friends, as well.  Applying what we learned in college and have lived out post graduation, it seems only natural to join with us to ensure that the schools across Kansas and Nebraska remain disciple making ministries that will change lives here and around the world.
